HOW I'M DEALING WITH MENSTRUAL CRAMPS - BEYOU MONTHLY PATCH REVIEW

I also want to put in a friendly reminder that this post is not intended to be medical advice or to encourage anyone to make changes to their current medicine routines – if you have concerns relating to your health, always consult a medical professional.

Recently, I was very kindly gifted a pack of BeYou Monthly Patches from BeYou to try out. To provide some context, I’ve always been someone who has suffered with varying levels of menstrual cramps each cycle, regardless of whether I used hormonal birth control or not. Sometimes they’d be near nothing and I wouldn’t use anything as they’d go on their own while, other times, like recently (thanks pandemic stress), they’re wild. By wild, I mean that painkillers would be essential for me to get through my day as well as sitting with a heating pad.

Given this, I suppose you could say that I was both interested and sceptical when I came across the BeYou Monthly patches via a Facebook ad one day. The patches are designed to release cooling oils (menthol and eucalyptus) over a 12 hour period. Straight away, this was a huge change for me given that I have always used heat to help with menstrual cramps. I was initially confused by how a cooling action might be able to help but very ready to give it a try.

Initial experiences

On opening the package, I was greeted with a fresh eucalyptus scent which I really liked. As you can imagine, it was a very natural, herbal kind of fragrance given that the product utilises natural ingredients. As suggested on their website, I applied the patch low on my abdomen. I’m quite a small build so the edges of the patch met my hip bones on each side – I really liked having this amount of coverage.

After finishing getting dressed, I took a good look in the mirror – nothing could be seen through my clothing. I wanted to mention this since the company promote the product as discreet.

How the patches performed

Firstly, I just want to say that the cooling properties definitely continued for the full 12 hours which was great. The patch also stayed on easily throughout this time, even with getting changed/going to the toilet where there was definitely potential for it to get pulled loose. Everything remained flat against my skin with not even the corners lifting. To remove the patch comfortably at the end of the day, I thoroughly wet it down in the shower.

Did they help with my cramps?

The patches definitely soothed my menstrual cramps. I personally found myself taking fewer doses of painkillers and, when removing the patch at the end of the day, I noticed my cramps slowly started to increase without the patch there. I also found them really convenient as I did not need to be fixed to one place holding a heating pad on myself (I normally use one that goes in the microwave which can be quite bulky).

In terms of using something cooling versus my usual choice of heat pads, I was really surprised to find it more effective. Heat pads tend to leave me feeling hot and bothered, especially in the summer months and never quite soothe me as much as the BeYou patches seemed to.

The pros

  • Definitely helped my menstrual cramps
  • Discreet compared to some other options out there
  • Stayed in place easily all day
  • No skin irritations from adhesive
  • The company puts a lot of focus on sustainability (details of the construction/recyclability of the patches and their packaging can be found on the BeYou website)

The cons

  • If you’re not into eucalyptus, this one might not be for you – you tend to be able to smell it throughout the day although nobody I asked could detect it.
  • Not completely zero waste if this is a concern for you, however, I have not yet found anything totally zero waste that is also this discreet.

Conclusions – would I use BeYou Monthly Patches again?

I personally would continue using BeYou Monthly Patches as an option since I really enjoyed the cooling properties as well as the overall effectiveness at keeping me comfortable throughout the day. I also think the price is very fair. They can be purchased as a subscription or just a pack of 5 from BeYou directly.
