Introduction: Why FAM Gets a Bad Reputation
I’ve been practicing the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) since 2016, and over that time, I’ve heard a lot of myths and bizarre assumptions. For many, FAM is still seen as a “hippy” method or simple guesswork, but the science is robust.
I’m tackling the most frustrating misconceptions head-on. By understanding what FAM is not, you can gain confidence in what it truly is: a powerful, accurate tool for women’s health.
Myth 1: FAM is Just the Outdated “Rhythm Method”
This is the single most common and most damaging misconception. The Calendar Rhythm Method is a form of natural family planning that relies on calculating past cycle averages to predict the fertile window. It is inaccurate and has a high failure rate.
The Truth: FAM is Real-Time Science
Modern Fertility Awareness Methods (like Symptothermal, Billings, or Marquette) are completely different because they rely on real-time biological indicators to determine fertility today, not a retrospective guess.
These scientific observations mean that FAM methods, when used correctly, boast efficacy rates comparable to hormonal birth control.
If you’re wondering about efficacy, I explore why the method sometimes “fails” in my post here.
Myth 2: It’s Only for People with an Absolutely ‘Regular’ Cycle

Another common myth is that if you have a cycle that varies by even a few days, you can’t use FAM. This is simply untrue.
The Truth: It Works for Irregular Cycles
FAM is actually one of the most helpful tools for women with irregular, long, or fluctuating cycles (including those with PCOS or coming off hormonal contraception).
The beauty of FAM is that the rules allow you to correctly identify the fertile window regardless of when you ovulate. Since it relies on daily signs, you simply wait for those signs to confirm your fertile window has closed. FAM eliminates guesswork and gives you accurate confidence, making it far superior to calendar-based apps for irregular cycles.
Myth 3: It’s Only to be Learned from a Doctor
Many people believe that if they can’t get FAM resources from their GP or hospital, they shouldn’t bother.
The Truth: FAM is Best Learned from a Qualified Instructor
While some medical professionals are excellent FAM resources, many others are not trained in the modern, detailed rules required for high efficacy. Qualified FAM instructors (who are often certified by specific FAM models) provide:
- In-depth lessons tailored to your circumstances.
- One-to-one chart reviews to catch errors early.
- Specific rules for unique cycle situations.
A certified instructor is often the gold standard for learning, I talk more on how to find one here.
Myth 4: It’s Only for Those Trying to Conceive (TTC)

For years, cycle tracking was pigeonholed as a tool purely for couples who want a baby, ignoring its other massive benefits.
The Truth: It’s a Comprehensive Health Tool
FAM is just as effective for avoiding pregnancy (when followed strictly) as it is for achieving it. Beyond conception, FAM is a phenomenal tool for:
- Troubleshooting: identifying possible hormone imbalances, luteal phase defects, or anovulatory cycles.
- Advocacy: providing your doctor with a clear, objective log of your cycle to support health conversations.
- Hormone-free living: allowing users to completely avoid the side effects associated with hormonal contraception.
Myth 5: You Must Give Up Sex During Your Fertile Window

The perceived commitment to abstinence is a massive roadblock for many couples interested in FAM, causing many to abandon the method before they even start.
The Truth: Your Rules Determine Your Options (And Sex is More Than Intercourse)
This myth is only partially true, and it depends entirely on the specific FAM method and the couple’s intentions.
- Strict Abstinence: For all FAM methods (Symptothermal, Creighton, Billings, etc.), abstinence from intercourse and genital contact that potentially transfers semen during the fertile window is the only way to ensure the method’s published highest efficacy rate.
- Intimacy is Still Possible: Crucially, abstinence from intercourse does not mean giving up intimacy altogether! The fertile window encourages couples to explore and enjoy non-genital forms of connection and intimacy.
- Barrier Option: Some methods are more flexible and allow for the option of using a barrier method (such as condoms or diaphragms) during the fertile window. However, this is not permitted in all methods, and you must check your specific method’s rules.
- The Key Rule: If you choose to use a barrier method, you must understand that your overall efficacy during that time relies entirely on the success rate of the barrier method itself. You must also ensure that the method you choose does not interfere with the primary fertility sign you are tracking (e.g., cervical mucus).
This flexibility allows couples to align their family planning goals with their lifestyle, but it requires them to strictly adhere to the rules of their chosen method.
Other Common Myths I Had to Laugh At
Here are a few other things that FAM is definitely NOT:
- It’s witchcraft or sorcery.
- It’s a conspiracy theory.
- Something that requires 10 years of yoga and special powers.
- It’s only for people who are ‘too comfortable’ with their own body.
- It’s only for rich or only for poor women.
- It’s only for ‘intense feminists’.
