Introduction – What is Manta Sleep?

Manta Sleep is a brand that produces a number of eye masks for sleep as well as others for general relaxation (such as heating and cooling options). I first came across the brand by seeing YouTubers discuss it via sponsorships they had several years ago, however, at the time, I always pushed it out of my mind as I was convinced that cheap masks could do the same thing. This article is my honest review having now been kindly gifted a mask from Manta Sleep and, as a spoiler, a conversation about how wrong I was about cheaper alternatives.

Unboxing and Using the Manta Sleep Pro Mask

I received the Pro mask to try and, as full disclosure, I am not under any obligation to write this article as it was a ‘no strings attached’ situation. On receiving the mask, I was surprised by how, in the package, you not only receive the mask itself, but you also get a carry case and some earplugs. Personally, I’m quite satisfied with my Loop Dream earplugs but it’s a very nice touch to have them included. The mesh carry case is also nice as it’s lightweight for travel and can double up as a wash bag when you need to clean the mask.

The mask features moveable C shaped eye cups which mean significantly reduced pressure on your face while side sleeping (this is my preferred sleep position). Other clever features include anti-slip gel to prevent the mask falling off as well as a special type of Velcro that doesn’t grab onto your hair.

The mask is advertised as 100% blackout and includes fabrics that enhance ventilation. I can attest that these are definitely true. I wore the mask on a plane flight and was able to nap without a problem (all of the plane lights were on at the time) and, on hot summer nights, I’ve had no issues with feeling like my face/head was hot or sweaty. I’ve also not experienced any issues with my hair being pulled or the mask slipping off at night.

Pros of Manta Sleep Pro Mask

  • Blackout – this mask is definitely 100% blackout. No doubts about it.
  • Comfort – I really love how comfortable this mask is vs lower cost alternatives. With those, I felt like I was constantly having to adjust them or losing them altogether by the time I woke up in the morning.
  • Quality – I’ve been wearing the mask almost nightly for over a month at the time of writing this post. By the time I’d used other masks for this long, there would be loose threads, pilling of the fabric or they’d feel stretched out and ill-fitting. With Manta Sleep, I haven’t experienced any of these issues and the mask still looks good as new.
  • Sleep quality – I’ve noticed I’ve been able to fall back asleep in the early morning (when it’s beginning to get light outside in the summertime) far more easily with the mask on as opposed to without it or with the previous options I used to wear.

Cons

  • Initial investment – I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that the cost of the Pro mask surprised me at first. However, having used it, I can very much understand why it comes at a premium price point given the quality of construction and its unparalleled performance.

Conclusion: Are Manta Sleep Masks Worth It?

In the past, I exclusively used contoured sleep masks purchased from either discount retailers or eBay. I don’t recall paying anything more than around £5 per mask and I’d usually be able to get around 6 months of decent wear from them with a fast drop off once the fabric/elastic band would wear out. Throughout the lifespan of these masks, I’d frequently wake up with them on the floor or somewhere else in the bed besides on my face. I’d also often have pressure marks on my face or, when rolling over in bed, they’d let in light. While this was tolerable in the depths of winter, it would disturb my sleep on bright summer mornings or when taking a nap during plane travel.

Manta Sleep has removed all of these issues for me, and I was genuinely shocked at how well-made and effective it is. I didn’t want to enjoy it as much as I do as now, I doubt I’d ever want to go back to cheaply made alternatives. If you’re on the search for something to improve your night’s sleep and are considering an eye mask, Manta Sleep is the brand to go to.
