Introduction
I’ve been a lover of my Leaf Shave razor for a good few years now. I love how eco-friendly it is vs traditional cartridge razors and I also love how easy it is to use.
Recently, I realised that my current method for removing facial peach fuzz wasn’t giving me the best results. I had been using a battery operated shaver but noticed I would break out about a day afterwards, especially around my mouth. For context, I’m not someone who removes all of the peach fuzz from my face but instead, only from selected areas where it bothers me. Normal areas for me to remove the hair are around my mouth and around the brow area – by doing these places, I find I can achieve better make up application.
What Is the Leaf Shave Dermaplaner and What Are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?
Leaf Shave’s Dermaplaner is the eco-friendly answer to traditional dermaplaners. It is an all-metal product which utilises standard single-edged blades (can be purchased affordably in most places that sell shaving products) and a proprietary blade guard that allows it to be used safely.
According to WebMD, dermaplaning, in general, has benefits like: brighter and smoother skin, evening skin tone, reducing the appearance of scarring and clearing pores to limit breakouts. Leaf also suggest it can improve the permeability of skincare products.
Pros of the Leaf Shave Dermaplaner
- Plastic free – I love the eco-friendliness of this product. Blades and the blade guards are recyclable – I like to collect them in an old metal money box in my bathroom cabinet as the coin slot makes it really easy to post the old blades in. Leaf do sell a blade disposal box on their website however if you’d like something a little more sleek.
- Quality – much like the Leaf Shave razor, their dermaplaner has a nice weight and solid-feeling construction. I’m hopeful it will last a very long time (I’m currently several years into using my razor from Leaf!).
- Easy to use – until I used this dermaplaner, I had never tried this method of hair removal before. I had been nervous to purchase a cheaply made, disposable dermaplaner from a local shop, partly because it would have been wasteful but also because I was anxious about quality. Given that I have felt confident with my current Leaf razor, it only felt natural to trust the brand again. I’m happy to report that there was no learning curve at all with this product – I was able to get good results easily from day one.
Cons of the Leaf Shave Dermaplaner
- Blade guards – I’m not sure what an alternative could be but part of me wishes that the blade guards would last forever. Leaf currently advise that the blade guard needs to be replaced every month which is slightly inconvenient for me given that they cannot be purchased in any shops near me (vs blades which I normally pick up in health shops or chemists in the shaving aisle).
- Instructions – maybe this is just a ‘me’ thing but I found getting set up slightly more difficult than I assumed it would be. There were only very minimal set up instructions inside the box so I didn’t fully understand how the blades/blade guards were placed inside the dermaplaner or taken out initially. I also didn’t realise that the piece of metal inside the box was the precision clip (designed to block part of the blade to allow you to go around more intricate areas like eyebrows) until I looked at the product page again and more carefully looked at all of the photos on the box. The gaps in my understanding were quickly resolved by visiting Leaf’s website and watching one of the videos again, however, I can see how it would be slightly frustrating if you wanted to get set up quickly, without going online. Also, for full disclosure here, I purchased my Leaf dermaplaner from Agent Shave as Leaf were not shipping to the UK at the time. Agent Shave does not feature any videos, only written text, on their product listings so I did not view much ‘getting started’ information prior to purchase.
Conclusion
Overall, I would definitely recommend purchasing a Leaf dermaplaner to anyone who enjoys dermaplaning regularly. I can honestly say that I have experienced some of the benefits of the process, such as brighter skin and better product absorption. My make up also applies more smoothly – as if it is sinking into my skin more rather than just a layer on top. Using the product has also been a really easy experience – for some reason, I thought I would experience irritation while dermaplaning (from the little vellus hairs being pulled) but it’s a completely seamless process with zero discomfort with Leaf.
