Why I’m interested in natural deodorants
In this blog post, I wanted to talk about Wild as the latest natural deodorant I’ve tried. For a long time now, I’ve been looking out for natural, more eco-friendly alternatives of everyday products I use. This interest stems from my movement to become more eco-conscious with the creation of my business, House of Callaway, several years ago. I’ve also always been intrigued by the growing amount of information on the effects of using chemical-laden products on the body, hence my interest in choosing more natural alternatives. This post is a continuation of my journey to find the best natural deodorant for me.
What is Wild deodorant?
Wild deodorant is a refillable, natural deodorant. It is available to be ordered online but has recently been introduced into Sainsbury’s stores. The company claims that it is a 100% effective, aluminium-free formula and boasts composable, plastic-free packaging.
On the website, you can order a choice of 1 case and 1 refill while joining their subscription service (you can also personalise your case for an additional charge) or a one-off purchase of either 1 case and 3 refills or 1 case and 5 refills. From here, you can then select from several scent choices with limited edition scents popping up throughout the year (I tended to notice these coming out via their social media pages).
Wild deodorant review – first impressions
In the interest of being completely honest with you about my experience, I want to say that I didn’t get off to the best start with my order from Wild. Shipping took a long time compared to other products I had ordered from elsewhere at the time and the tracking did not work. On reaching out to the shipping company, they informed me that my package was lost and to contact Wild. Strangely, my parcel arrived the next day after this experience.
On opening the box, I was really impressed by the packaging – it was recyclable but also premium-looking at the same time. I chose to purchase an aqua case along with 3 refills in Orange Zest, Mint and Eucalyptus and Coconut Dreams as a one-off purchase. This came to £20 after using a £5 off coupon I found online.
Installing the refill inside the case was a quick and easy process – I had initially been worried as I’d seen a few people say they’d had difficulty with this part but I had no issues.
My thoughts on Wild deodorant
Application of the deodorant was a pleasant experience each morning – the formula was creamy but not sticky. It did have a tendency to leave white marks on dark clothing so that was definitely something I was careful with when dressing. I did not notice any other kind of staining though on clothing after washing which was great (some other deodorants in the past have left yellow residue).
The first fragrance I tried was the Orange Zest and I personally found that I would start to smell less than good after only a few hours. Given that I had previously been using a natural deodorant before Wild, I was not expecting any kind of transitional period that can sometimes occur when people switch from conventional antiperspirants. Regardless, I held out for 2 weeks to see if it would improve and when it didn’t, I reached out to Wild to see if they had any suggestions for me. This was when I was informed that their Sandalwood fragrance is actually the strongest option and that the order of fragrance strengths go like this:
Coconut Dreams – the weakest
Lavender Haze
Bergamot Rituals
Orange Zest
Jasmine & Mandarin Blossom
Mint & Eucalyptus
Cotton & Sea Salt
Sandalwood and Patchouli – the strongest
Before writing this review, I checked on their website to see if I could see this mentioned anywhere but could not find it, hence putting it here in case it’s helpful to anyone! Wild very kindly sent me a Sandalwood refill free of charge once they had informed me of the above.
After switching to the Sandalwood scent, I had a much more positive experience with the fragrance lasting all day and no unpleasant odours, even on gym days.
Would I buy Wild again?
Personally, I enjoyed the formula of Wild more than I’ve enjoyed other cream-type natural deodorants. I also enjoyed that comes in an easy-to-apply container rather than a tube or jar like other natural brands often do (I hate sticky/greasy fingers when in a rush in the morning!). I also did not experience any sort of irritations which have been a problem in the past with other brands. Another plus for me is the fact that Wild is a significantly more eco-friendly option for me in comparison to another brand I normally enjoy, which comes in a plastic rollerball. In conclusion, I really like the idea that they are now stocked in Sainsbury’s stores so I feel that I will likely purchase again but in-store rather than online.
