Introduction

I’ve mentioned it in various places around this site, but I’ve always had painful periods. For me, this means having 2-3 days of cramping with one of those days being so bad, it will interrupt my daily life. I could give further examples of how bad cramps have gotten but I feel it’s a case of ‘if you know, you know’ when it comes to this topic. I’ve discussed it with my doctor but never really gotten answers – just advice on pain management in terms of medication schedules or what I could safely use to help.
My toolkit for period pain management includes over the counter painkillers, BeYou patches and a hot water bottle – things like stretching or eating a banana wouldn’t even come close to helping me unfortunately. For some reason, until now, I hadn’t considered using a TENS machine for my cramps. I’d seen them advertised by other brands but always assumed it wouldn’t help. I’ve used TENS in the past for muscular issues (sports injuries or if I’ve slept ‘wrong’) and found it to feel itchy or tingly rather than as if it’s actually helping with the pain.
I chose to try a period pain specific TENS unit from BeYou as I was curious about whether it would feel any different given that it is designed for the specific purpose of helping to reduce cramps. I already enjoy using patches from the brand (see the full review of those here) so I was confident that the quality of products the brand offers would be good.
What is BeYou TENS 2.0?

The BeYou TENS 2.0 is a small, wireless, and drug-free device that provides relief from period pain. It works by sending mild electrical pulses through gel pads (these can be placed on your abdomen or back, depending on where you feel you need relief). These pulses “block” pain signals from reaching your brain and also encourage your body to release its own endorphins.
BeYou promote that the product was designed with ‘1,000+ women in chronic pain’ in mind to ensure effectiveness. It has also been dermatologically tested with skin-friendly adhesives on the pads.
Pros
- It works – I’ve really noticed a difference when using the product during my worst days where pain is high. I try not to take too many painkillers, so it allows me to extend the time between doses as it takes the edge off enough for me to focus on whatever I’m doing that day.
- Drug-free – as the device works via TENS, there are no medications involved. This is ideal for those who either cannot use particular painkillers or those who choose not to.
- Can be used for various conditions – the device is designed to help with general period cramps as well as other pain associated with conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, and adenomyosis. The product page even mentions it may work for IBS cramping.
- Discreet and portable – I’ve found success wearing the device under clothing, it’s small enough that people don’t notice it which is great for using it while going about your day.
- Customisable – It has 6 different pulse modes and 20 intensity levels which means plenty of choice for how you use the device.
- Different pad options – the product comes with two different shaped pads so you can decide which will work best for you and your body.
Cons
- Not for everyone – on speaking with friends, some say they’ve never found success with TENS machines on any kind of pain they might be experiencing. While I had a good experience with this product, it may not provide enough relief for everyone, simply because everybody is different.
- Cost – this device does involve an initial investment as well as the ongoing cost of replacement pads. For some, they may feel that the cost simply isn’t worth it vs buying lower cost painkillers for example.
- Sustainability – BeYou advise that the gel pads can be used 20-30 times before needing to be replaced. This is great as they should last me a while, although I’m not sure how I feel sustainability-wise that they’ll need to be thrown away when their useable life comes to an end.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the BeYou TENS 2.0 has been a valuable addition to my period pain management toolkit. While it may not be a complete cure for everyone, it has proven to be a solid method for taking the edge off my worst cramping days. Its discreet design makes it a practical solution for use while on the go, allowing me to stay focused and active even during my most painful moments. For anyone seeking an alternative or complementary method to traditional painkillers, this device is definitely worth considering. It offers a new kind of freedom and control over period pain, and for me, that’s a welcome change.
