In this post, I want to discuss my thoughts on the available flavours of Huel Hot and Savoury meal packs. As I mentioned in my other review, I’m no expert – just someone who loves to give my opinion for a bit of fun and to possibly help others to find a new favourite.

Huel advertise their Hot and Savoury meals as:

“Hot, hearty nutrition in minutes. Whole grains, pasta or noodles with real vegetables, and all the nutrients your body needs. Just add hot water for a comforting, complete meal at home, at work, or wherever you need a quick upgrade.” (Source)

Huel Meals Review: The Hot & Savoury Range

One of the biggest hurdles I face on a daily basis is finding something nutritious when I’m in a rush or simply don’t have the mental energy to cook from scratch. This is exactly where the Huel Hot & Savoury range has become a bit of a lifesaver for me. Unlike a standard noodle cup or quick snack, these are nutritionally complete meals that actually keep me full. Whether I’m hovering over my laptop or coming in late from a busy day, having a meal that is ready in five minutes—without compromising on vitamins and minerals—solves that “what should I eat?” panic. They’ve become my go-to “emergency” meal that doesn’t feel like a compromise.

Pros of Huel Hot and Savoury

  • Nutrition – It provides a far more impressive nutritional profile compared to standard “just add water” pots or supermarket convenience meals, making it a much more sensible choice for me for a quick lunch.
  • Satiety – I noticed I felt more satisfied when consuming one of these meals for lunch, reducing the urge for boredom snacking throughout the afternoon.
  • Speed – They offer a hot, complete meal in under five minutes, which is a lifesaver when you lack the time or mental energy to cook from scratch.
  • Packaging type – Huel’s Hot and Savoury range used to be sold in a bag where you scooped out what you needed each time. While this was slightly more environmentally friendly in terms of less waste, it meant that you may get more or less flavour depending on how much of each ingredient got into your scoop. I really like the change in packaging to single serve as it’s meant consistent results each time and a major advantage to those who might want to take meals to work or away e.g camping.

Huel products have been great as quick lunches when I’m short on time.

Cons of Huel Hot and Savoury

  • Grainy texture – Because of some of the ingredients like quinoa and flaxseed, these meals often have a very specific, grainy texture (more or less so depending on the flavour chosen). If you are particularly fussy about food textures or expect something identical to a traditional homemade meal, this may be a challenge.
  • Cost vs prep – While convenient, the price per meal is higher than if you were to meal-prep similar ingredients yourself in my opinion, though you are paying for the significant time saved.

Huel Hot and Savoury Review – The Flavours

Chick'n & mushroom nutritionally complete food pouch with protein, vitamins, and fibre details on white packaging.

Chick’n & Mushroom

My Thoughts: I think I approached this one wrong. I went into it expecting it to be similar to other brands of prepackaged chicken and mushroom flavoured noodle/pasta products which it definitely isn’t (and doesn’t try to be given the nutritional profile!). I personally found that this had a bit of a chalky undertone which was a little distracting. The flavour itself was ok but nothing to write home about.

Overall Rating: 3/10 – I’d choose it if it were the only thing in my cupboard.

Cajun Pasta

My Thoughts: I really liked the warming spice of this flavour option. It wasn’t spicy as such but felt hearty to enjoy. The flavour combination works really well with the pasta and vegan protein.

Overall Rating: 8/10 – would recommend this one to someone new to Huel!

Huel Cajun Pasta pouch with 25g protein, 26 vitamins, and 7g fibre for a nutritionally complete meal.
Huel Mac & Cheeze pouch, nutritionally complete with 25g protein, 26 vitamins, and 3g fibre.

Mac & Cheeze

My Thoughts: There’s something about this one that didn’t hit the spot for me. Perhaps it’s down to me not being a big fan of plant-based cheese alternatives. I found the taste a little odd and the texture slightly grainy vs the traditional mac and cheese I’m used to. It wasn’t awful but I also wouldn’t rush back to this in a hurry.

Overall Rating: 2/10 – Not for me unfortunately.

Thai Green Curry

My Thoughts: The flavour and aroma of this option is brilliant. However, I really couldn’t get past the texture. This one is very grain-heavy rather than the others which include ingredients like pasta. I struggled to fully enjoy this one as it ended up quite chewy despite soaking it for the recommended amount of time.

Overall Rating: 6/10 – I find it difficult to say I don’t like it as I love the flavour (it tastes pretty authentic in my opinion), it’s just the texture that takes some getting used to and I’m a very texture-oriented person!

Huel Thai Green Curry pouch showcasing nutrition: 24g protein, 26 vitamins, 9g fibre. Nutritionally complete food.
Huel Madras pouch, nutritionally complete food with 25g protein, 26 vitamins, and 8g fibre per serving.

Madras

My Thoughts: After a terrible experience with a madras in the past (meaninglessly spicy), I was fully ready to dislike this one. I was very quickly proven wrong. This Hot and Savoury meal has a pleasant amount of spice, surprisingly complex flavours and genuinely feels like you’re eating curry and rice.

Overall Rating: 9/10 – Definitely one for those who love curry!

Mexican Chilli

My Thoughts: I really love how the rice and beans go together in this for a satisfying lunch – the texture is really enjoyable and I think I prefer it to meat-based quick lunch alternatives out there. The taste is true enough to regular chilli and has a nice spice level. This feels like something that would be lovely while taking a break on a cold hike – just mix this and hot water from a flask in a separate container and you’d have a warming meal.

Overall Rating: 9/10 – It doesn’t top my leaderboard simply because I make an epic homemade chilli but it comes close!

Huel Mexican Chilli pouch, 25g protein, 26 vitamins, 10g fibre. Nutritionally complete food. White minimalist packaging.
Huel Pasta Bolognese pouch, displaying nutrition info: 25g protein, 26 vitamins, 5g fibre. Nutritionally complete.

Pasta Bolognese

My Thoughts: I really love this one. The texture is lovely, the flavour is very realistic in comparison to a home-cooked meal and the aroma is really appetising. If I had to choose only one flavour of Huel Hot and Savoury, it would be this one.

Overall Rating: 10/10 – The place to start if you’re unsure on this product – if you like spag bol, I think you’ll like this!

Hoisin ‘Duck’ Noodles

My Thoughts: While I enjoyed this flavour overall, I found the anise seed aspect of the Hoisin spice blend to come through quite strongly. This isn’t normally a spice I enjoy so it took a little getting used to but once past the initial taste, I began to really like the flavour. I wouldn’t say its identical to something you’d get as a takeaway but it’s definitely nice!

Overall Rating: 7/10 – A nice change from my usual favourites, something to keep on the lunch rotation!

Huel Hoisin 'Duck' Noodles pack, nutritionally complete with 22g protein, 26 vitamins, and 4g fibre per pouch.
Huel Fiery Chick'n Noodles pack; complete meal with 22g protein, 26 vitamins, and 6g fibre. Nutritious and convenient.

Fiery Chick’n Noodles

My Thoughts: Huel’s website warns that this variation is spicy and they aren’t lying. My husband really enjoyed this but I wasn’t able to manage more than a couple of forkfuls (he was very happy to finish the bowl for me). Besides the heat, the flavour profile is complex and tasty with the lemongrass coming through nicely.

Overall Rating: 2/10 – I really can’t do this one as I’m not great with high levels of spice but I can imagine that this would be a true favourite for spice lovers.

Katsu Curry Noodles

My Thoughts: My absolute, all-time favourite. I first had this option in the pot form Huel offer and fell in love from the first taste. The flavour is very similar to a katsu curry you’d get anywhere else so it doesn’t feel like you’re trying to be nutritionally conscious while eating this. The spice is mild and the flavours aromatic – nothing not to love.

Overall Rating: 10/10 – Always my first choice.

Huel Katsu Curry Noodles package with nutritional info: 22g protein, 26 vitamins, 8g fibre. Nutritionally complete.
Huel Korean BBQ Noodles pouch with 22g protein, 26 vitamins and minerals, 4g fibre. Nutritionally complete food.

Korean BBQ Noodles

My Thoughts: I found these to be really sweet in a way I wasn’t overly fussed on. Appreciate that some people love the sweet BBQ taste however! Despite the sweetness, the overall flavours were nice and well-balanced (mild, enjoyable spice paired with the smokiness of the BBQ worked well).

Overall Rating: 5/10 – Probably wouldn’t choose it again due to the sweetness but others may love that!
