Introduction
I’ve been mulling over how to present this review for a while now but have come to the conclusion that I wanted to keep it short and to the point. I’ve already written a full review of the original Tempdrop as well as a comparison article between the first and updated version which can be viewed here and here. This article will address my thoughts on Tempdrop 2 – the brand’s most recent offering.
A Reminder: What is Tempdrop?
Tempdrop is a wearable thermometer designed for users of the Fertility Awareness Method. It is able to produce a singular basal body temperature reading, based on data points collected throughout the night. It can then be synced to a mobile app to view the readings. It is especially useful for those with interrupted sleep schedules or those who do not appreciate waking up to take manual temperature readings. It is not an essential to practice FAM but a luxury I have enjoyed having access to for many years.
A Recap of the Differences Between Tempdrop 1 and Tempdrop 2
If you haven’t read the article already, below is a very brief summary of the updates that can be found in the most recent Tempdrop device:
- Tempdrop 2 has a ‘new and improved’ fabric armband.
- The newer version has a battery door to help make battery changes easier.
- The original Tempdrop can hold 24 hours of data (about 3 eight-hour sleeps) while the new version can hold 60 hours (about 7 sleeps). This means that, with the newer version, you could theoretically wear it for a week before needing to sync it.
- Tempdrop 2 syncs in 10 seconds while the former version takes around 60 seconds.
- Firmware is updated automatically on Tempdrop 2 while you would need to do this manually with the original.
Pros of Tempdrop 2
- Fast syncing – compared with Tempdrop 1, it still shocks me how quickly Tempdrop 2 is able to sync and download multiple days worth of temperature readings. I love how convenient it is to quickly press the sync and then move on with my day. The older model wasn’t excessively slow by any means but Tempdrop 2 is very fast by comparison.
- More days stored – as mentioned above, Tempdrop 1 could only store around 3 nights worth of sleep data while the newer model stores about 7. Once ovulation has been confirmed for the cycle, I can be quite forgetful when it comes to starting a sync so this has been really helpful for me (previously, if I forgot, the data would begin to overwrite so I’d have 1-2 missing days of readings 4-5 days ago).
- Battery door – I don’t think there’s ever been another human so excited by a battery door. Previously, changing my Tempdrop battery was a source of anxiety as I was often worried about breaking the device (it’s not super delicate as far as electronics go but the old method was to separate the two halves of the shell which felt quite invasive). Now, I feel much more confident in my ability to change the battery carefully.
Cons of Tempdrop 2
- I wish the battery door was different – despite loving the new battery door, I personally have always preferred the type where you place a coin in a slot to twist it to the unlock setting. Tempdrop 2 requires a special tool to open it up. This is a very personal con of mine so I don’t expect a huge amount of other people to relate to be honest.
Final Thoughts – Should You Upgrade to Tempdrop 2?
I’ve loved my first few cycles with Tempdrop 2 and really appreciate the improvements the brand has made to the product overall.
In terms of whether an existing Tempdrop 1 customer should upgrade, I’d personally say that it depends. If you have the space in your budget and would find the new features useful (e.g more data storage for those who love off-grid camping where they may not be able to sync for a period of time), I say go ahead. If you’ve never used a Tempdrop device, I’d say you’d be happy with either model – Tempdrop 1 can be found at a lower price compared with its newer counterpart if you’re looking for a bargain.
As a side note, if you really love the look of the new armband but don’t need a new device at the moment, you can purchase it separately on Tempdrop’s website.
All in all, I really appreciate having a Tempdrop device and can’t see myself moving away from it any time soon.
