Introduction

Lustre is a brand I go way back with. Having originally used their older wired blue light system while I was in university (around 2016) then being offered the opportunity to try out their wireless Solo model in 2020, I feel I’ve really had the chance to experience the benefits of light therapy for improving how my skin looks.

Originally created in 2004 under the name Ambicare Health, Lustre boasts a strong scientific background and actively seeks out safe, effective solutions for skin concerns such as acne. By reading their website, it is evident that customer experience is at the forefront of new product developments such as ensuring convenience for the busy lives of users.

This post will discuss my experiences using Lustre’s more recent offering – the Lustre ClearSkin Renew Pro Facewear.

What is Lustre ClearSkin Renew Pro Facewear?

This product is a full-face semi-flexible mask featuring blue, red, and near-infrared light in wavelengths 440nm, 630nm and 830nm respectively. It has 160 LED lights over 4 facial areas, which can be customised via an app (e.g., you can select a particular program for one facial area and a different one for the rest of your face if you wish). There are also built in goggles to prevent too much light coming into the direction of your eyes. The Lustre mask is also rechargeable for convenience via a USB-C cord.

Advertised Product Benefits

By using the mask, Lustre promotes benefits like ‘clearer, fresher and softer-looking skin’ and additional skin brightness. Lustre states the following on the product’s page:

“The use of Red, Blue and Near-infrared lights is a non-invasive and painless way to provide multiple benefits for your skin. Red light generates energy in the skin, which is absorbed by the cells and enhances their metabolism. Near-Infrared (NIR) light photons are able to pass through bone and dense connective tissue like cartilage and ligaments, which helps the cells perform their functions more efficiently, including repair and regeneration.

Blue light therapy is known for its acne-killing properties, and it does just that right under the skin.”

My Skin & Personal Thoughts

Before purchasing the product, I was in a complicated place with my skin. Having spent years of my life battling acne and it’s respective scarring, as I moved into my mid to late twenties, I noticed a dramatic shift in my skin. I suddenly noticed it was a lot drier in places and, at times when I wasn’t on top of my skincare routine, I tended to notice I was appearing older than my actual age. Of course, friends have always been kind to me, assuring me that I shouldn’t have been contemplating fillers at this stage, but it was always on my mind.

I have complete respect for those who make the decision to undergo more invasive cosmetic procedures if that’s what makes them happy and feel confident, but I wasn’t sure it was the right decision for me at this moment in time. I’ve always been someone who wants to try the least invasive and more gentle option before resorting to anything more. I also value high safety ratings and science-backed approaches as opposed to whatever is currently trending and may not have much knowledge behind it.

Given my positive track record with Lustre products, when I noticed the brand had brought out a new product geared towards refreshing the skin, I knew I wanted to experience it. I’d also never experienced near-infrared light therapy before and was really interested in giving it a try following seeing it mentioned frequently in YouTube beauty videos. I was fortunate enough to catch it during a sale so paid £270 as opposed to the full regular price of £450. My personal hopes from using the device were to experience smoother-looking skin as my pores can be quite large and textural, achieve a higher level of brightness to my skin in contrast to the dullness I often notice and, between those things, hopefully mitigate how noticeable my expression lines can be (notably 11 lines). To be quite clear, I went into trying this product with a hopeful mindset but by no means expecting injectable or surgical-level results considering the mask is non-invasive.

Unboxing and First Impressions

Like my original Lustre Pro from back in 2016, the Renew mask arrived in a sturdy, professional-looking box. The outside packaging clearly described the product inside as well as its functions. On opening the box, I found the mask, strap, goggles, instruction booklet, charging cable and storage pouch. Getting set up was easy – all I had to do was attach the strap and goggles then place the device on to charge before its first use.

Overall, I was really impressed by the quality of the mask itself – for some reason, I had gotten it into my head that it might be flimsy, but the device has a decent amount of weight and thickness to it.

My Experience Using the Lustre ClearSkin Renew Pro Mask

I decided to go for the Revitalise setting (red-looking light) which is advised to be done 5 times a week for 6 weeks. However, during the time period, I did occasionally use the Energise setting (blue/purple-looking light) if I was experiencing a breakout. Here are my personal pros and cons of the overall experience:

Pros

  • At just 10 minutes, the sessions are short and convenient for me. I felt able to fit them in, even if I was experiencing a particularly hectic day.
  • Given that the device is wireless and rechargeable, it was easy to be able to move around the house during a session if I needed to.
  • By wearing a mask with so many LEDs, I automatically found that the coverage was far superior to Lustre’s previous offerings and, even though I’ve still experienced great results from all the devices I’ve tried from them, this one was definitely the most comprehensive in terms of the areas I was treating all at once.
  • The results, for me, were noticeable after very few sessions. Despite believing I’d have to wear it for several sessions before seeing anything, I saw an increase in skin brightness after only 2 sessions – even my partner commented on it.

Cons

  • The device did feel quite heavy on my face, so I often found it easier to remain lying down and do a meditation session instead of roaming the house. I didn’t feel that this affected the overall experience much however as I enjoy the fact that the device feels high quality overall (rather than too lightweight) and I am a glasses wearer so I don’t have the best vision to complete household tasks regardless as I, obviously, can’t wear glasses during sessions.
  • While I love the concept of the app and the customisation ability it allows for, I personally chose not to use it after a few sessions. For me, I didn’t feel that I needed to customise any particular area and I also found that it slowed me down to need to connect the mask to the app each time. For others however, the customisation via the app may be a game-changer that is totally worth the extra few seconds it takes to link the mask each time.

Before and After Photos

No skincare routine review would be complete without some before and after photos. An outsider would probably say that there’s little to no difference between the two images, however, given that I know my own skin, I would disagree. As mentioned previously, I didn’t go into this expecting dramatic plastic-surgery-style results, instead, I was hoping to improve or enhance what I already had. As a note, I also maintained the same skincare routine as always in terms of products and followed the same lifestyle habits to ensure there were no big fluctuations that might sway the outcomes.

I personally noticed the following after using the Lustre mask – not all are ‘advertised’ benefits but I wanted to mention them anyway as a general observation:

  • Smoother-looking skin – my pores seemed less noticeable both when wearing make-up and without.
  • Easier application of make-up – my skin generally felt more balanced compared to the dramatic combination skin I had before (very oily in parts, flakiness in other areas) which led to make-up going on more easily and better blending.
  • My skin tone appears more even – I am naturally a cool-toned person, but I feel that my skin looks warmer overall since using the mask.
  • It’s hard to see from the images but I definitely saw an improvement in how visible fine lines are on my face – the 11 lines aren’t really visible on the after shot and in real life, I feel my forehead lines are less noticeable (I’ve had these lines since I was around 14 so I didn’t expect to see anything change, hence being pleasantly surprised). I personally put this down to an overall reduction in texture on my face.
  • It isn’t really something I could photograph but I noticed any breakouts I did have over the course of the sessions cleared much faster and with minimal marks compared to other times without the mask.

Would I recommend the device?

Overall, I would recommend the Lustre Renew Pro Facewear for anyone seeking a gentle, non-invasive way to enhance their natural skin or improve issues like acne or uneven skin tone. Despite it being one of the more high-cost items I’ve ever purchased for skincare purposes, I feel it has been a worthwhile investment into my wellbeing and self-confidence. As a side note, Lustre also offers another version of this product, Lustre ClearSkin Revive LED mask, which comes in at a lower price point and features just red and blue light as opposed to the additional near-infrared in the Pro model.

I will likely continue to use the mask to ‘top up’ my treatments as time goes on as I found it to be a convenient product to use that naturally fell into my usual self-care routine.
