My Original 2017 Review of Lustre Pure Light Pro:
In order to understand how I found Lustre Pure Light Pro as a way of helping to clear my acne, we need to go back in time. Since I was around 8 years old, I started to develop spots and acne. The spots were okay, just small pimples that any other young person might get but the acne was far from tolerable. By age 11, I often had large swellings under the skin of my face that would feel like painful marbles fixed to my facial bones. I could just about deal with them when they were on my cheeks but if they were near a part of my face that moved, such as eyebrows, the pain would irritate me all day. It wasn’t just the pain and annoyance that bothered me however. “Friends” would ask me what was wrong with my face, tell me I hadn’t put on enough make-up to cover it all or simply say I’d look better if I didn’t have spots. Over time, this really diminished my self-confidence.
By age 20, I had had enough. I’d visited the doctor frequently throughout my teenage years and had received creams that took the colour out of my clothing or made my skin wrinkled and dry. I also tried out antibiotics but had a nasty reaction. Neither helped to lessen the spots. At age 17 I began taking the combined birth control pill for other reasons but secretly hoped it would help my face — no such luck. Then one day, I found Lustre while browsing online (or as I call it, ‘face lights’).
I spoke to my grandmother about it during one of our ‘catch up’ phone calls while I was living in university halls. She very kindly gave me the money to supplement my savings so that I could buy the pro version of the Lustre machine as, yes, it is quite an initial investment. With the price I paid being just over £250, I compared this to the cost of the other option my grandmother and I discussed that day – visiting a private dermatologist for whatever treatment course they recommend. It’s not that I didn’t want to visit another doctor but more that I knew that a course of treatment supervised by a dermatologist could run at a much higher cost than a Lustre device. I had also tried so many creams and medications by this time that I had lost interest in trying any more for the moment.

Following the above background information, let’s get into what a Lustre machine actually is and how it helps reduce acne. Lustre Pure Light machines have three treatment heads with little lights inside so each head forms a bright lamp. The wavelength of the light coming from the heads is specific to kill the bacteria that causes acne. Each head is secured to the area of the face you want to treat with special sticky strips that come with the machine (you can also purchase refills). You set the machine to your desired treatment time and you’re free to get on with whatever you’re doing since the process is hands-free. When the lights turn off at the end of your treatment time, you carefully peel away the sticky strips, discard them and pop the machine back on charge ready for the next time. A tip involving this is to have a timer plug set to come on in the middle of the night so you don’t have to worry about overcharging the device (even though that’s mostly an issue with really old products from the past but still a fear ingrained in my mind!). This also means the device will always be ready for you.

To summarise, these are the pros and cons of the device in my opinion:
Pros:
- Convenient (hands-free design unlike other brands which require you to sit for an hour holding something to your face – I don’t think I’d ever have the motivation for that!)
- Actually works unlike the other things I had tried.
- Chemical free so safer for those with sensitive skin or a good choice for those looking to live a more natural lifestyle.
- Safe and free of side effects (the light wavelength used is safe for skin and is not linked to skin cancer).
- Far cheaper than going for consultations and treatment with a private doctor (however, I do not condone people avoiding doctors altogether, it’s important you get your skin checked so you know that it is acne you’re dealing with and not something else).
Cons:
- The sticky strip refills have to be repurchased (but honestly, it isn’t bad when you compare how much I was spending on other skin care products that just weren’t working).
- The battery life isn’t brilliant (it lasts for 3 sessions on one charge, hence my suggestion about getting a timer plug or returning it to the power source after sessions so it’s always ready).
Overall conclusion on Lustre Pure Light Acne Treatment
In conclusion, I very much recommend a Lustre machine to anyone and everyone who’s struggling with acne since it offers a very safe, natural way of treating it. I’ve included below my before and after photos so you can see for yourself what results I got after the 12 week course. All I have left in the right photo is some scarring and marks from where old spots had healed a while before. Overall, I feel that the price is worth it since it has given me a completely new lease of life that I didn’t have before due to the confidence loss of having problem skin for so long.

2022 update:
Following my above review, my skin reverted back to similar levels of acne as before. This was due to not doing the top-up treatments following the end of the initial 12-week course. Overall, I still stand by my original opinion that it was worth the money as I remained relatively acne-free for approximately 18 months. The machine I spoke about above is no longer available as the brand has transitioned over to the Lustre ClearSkin Solo. This model features a single lamp you fix to your skin rather than a set of three connected to a control pad like mine. You can also purchase three together for a bundle price. Lustre reached out to me to ask whether I’d like to review this new model, you can read my full thoughts here.
