Introduction: Cloth Pads and Other Sustainable Period Products

Having previously owned a business making cloth sanitary pads, I’ve found myself mostly using them each period as opposed to other sustainable period products. However, I love having alternative options on hand as you never know when one option might be better than another. Having discovered the products I’m sharing in this post, I often find myself switching between these and cloth pads depending on my mood or the activities I’ll be doing. I’ve also added a product I use when I have cramps to the list too as they’ve become go-to’s as time has gone on.

Daye CBD Tampons and Pads

I was pleased to find that Daye has an abundance of information on the sustainability of their products on their website. Their tampons use sugarcane applicators, recyclable wrappers and the tampons themselves are organic. I was the type of person who had never really been into tampons (after negative experiences with lower quality options in my teenage years) but I have found Daye tampons to be comfortable as well as effective in terms of the CBD soothing the pelvic tension/tightness I tend to experience each cycle.

If CBD isn’t your thing, you can also get ones without (known as ‘naked’ on the site). I’m also a big fan of the steps they have taken to ensure their tampons are safe – they are sterilised and have a protective sleeve to prevent fibre loss.

Daye also make pads. I tend to use these when my period has come when I’m overwhelmingly busy and the idea of washing cloth pads just doesn’t feel good. I love the sustainability profile of these pads because, even though they are disposable, they completely biodegrade within 192 days, unlike many other plastic options that can stick around for hundreds of years.

Menstrual Cups

I have several menstrual cups in my collection: two from Mooncup UK, an Intimina Lily Cup, one from Hey Girls and a BeYou branded cup.

My personal favourites at the moment are the Hey Girls cup as well as the one from BeYou. I find the silicone to be a good level of firmness on both options so that the cup conforms to my body. Mooncup is a little more firm than Hey Girls/BeYou but I still love those too (so much that I have two as I wanted to have a spare!). Unfortunately, the Intimina cup was not for me as I found it too long. I have heard those with a high cervix say they have been great however!

Menstrual cups are a good option in terms of sustainability given that they can be sterilised and reused for several years. Most are also made from medical-grade silicone, making them a solid choice for those who suffer from allergies to certain materials.

BeYou Monthly Patches

Beyou Monthly Patches pack on a blue textured background, highlighting natural ingredients and 12-hour release.

I’ve always had painful period cramps – sometimes they’re manageable, sometimes they’re quite bad. I’m really happy to have found these patches from BeYou as they have provided me with another option for helping to soothe my cramps.

They are used by simply applying to wherever you feel cramps most strongly (for me, that’s my lower abdomen but I have seen people using them on their back too). The patches provide a tingling, cool sensation (as opposed to conventional heat packs) which I find really enjoyable – especially when I’m experiencing those hormonal hot flush moments. Given that they’re so thin, I have been able to successfully use them while working or going out and about – something that would be inconvenient at best with a hot water bottle.

When checking out the BeYou website for details on sustainability, they advise that the packaging can be recycled in most curbside collections while the patches themselves will biodegrade within 36 months.

If you want to give these a go, use code SARAHC at checkout for a discount on your first order with BeYou.
