Introduction
Imagine this: it’s the beginning of 2025 and I decide to check the calendar to figure out when I might be getting my period around the time of our wedding day and honeymoon. Given my prior experience with this subject, I was fully expecting to be bleeding during my honeymoon. What did I see instead? That I’d be halfway through my period on my wedding day itself.
Periods, in themselves, don’t really bother me. Having spent several years working in the reusable menstrual product space with my former small business, I feel decently desensitised to any potential drama or concern surrounding them. Also, given that experience and the fact I am in my late 20s, I’ve had long enough to learn which products work for me and which I’d rather leave in the past.
In this article, I wanted to revisit the subject of period underwear given that I’ve had to look at it with a fresh new set of eyes. With my wedding right around the corner, a gift I received from WUKA has been a gamechanger for wedding day period worries. I pride myself on honesty and openness on this site and I’m definitely not willing to gatekeep what I’ve discovered…
About WUKA

WUKA stands for ‘Wake up Kick Ass’ which is a mantra I love. As individuals, I believe we should never feel limited by our circumstances – menstruation being one of them. WUKA was founded by Ruby Raut back in 2017 and, on their site, they list their promises as a business as:
- ‘Eco-friendly products & business practices.
- Less waste. From our packaging to our products.
- Leak free periods.
- Super comfortable.’
How This Relates to My Wedding Day

Coming back to my original point on realising I’d be on my period during my wedding day, I want to emphasise how much research went into figuring the situation out. Currently, I tend to alternate between reusable pads, period pants, tampons and cups to manage my period. These all have their ups and downs for me but, in general, I’m happy with the options available to me. The difficult factor throughout all of this? My dress. My large, hoop-skirted, can’t-pee-without-major-assistance dress.
To put any doubts to bed, I absolutely love my gown. It’s everything I ever dreamt of as a little girl, and I feel so lucky I found it amongst a sea of other dresses that were just ‘ok’ in my opinion. However, before I even considered my cycle into the equation, I was already worried about how me and my need to pee all of the time would cope with such a dress. Many internet forums advised not wearing any underwear at all. This idea was immediately thrown out. I’ve never gone commando and I’m not about to start a habit of it, especially on my wedding day. I also wouldn’t feel secure enough to rely on internal period protection only throughout the day.
Underwear or no underwear, there’s also the issue of being able to change menstrual products while maintaining some kind of modesty.
The lengthy consideration of which period product would be appropriate to use on my wedding day ended with the discovery of WUKA Flex Detachable period pants. On finding them, I feel like I’d seen them before but never really understood how they might fit into my life. The sides are detachable with bra strap-like hooks which is fantastic for changing period pants while still leaving on your jeans and shoes in a public bathroom cubicle. For me, I’d ordinarily reserved period pants for skirts or dresses days or worn them at home when changing wasn’t such a big deal.

In terms of the routine, I’ve figured out for the wedding day, I will be utilising a second-hand Bridal Buddy I bought online to help me to get all of the skirt layers out of the way. From there, I’ll layer one pair of Flex Detachable over the ones already on and fasten them. Then, I’ll undo the original ones and slip them off. This avoids the need for too much exposure. If I don’t need to change at that moment in time but still need to use the loo, I can unclip one hip and allow them to drop to one foot rather than having to bend with a face full of skirt or worry about having my feet tied together by my underwear.
Pros
- Modesty – this can be taken in two ways. Firstly, WUKA Flex Detachable allow me the ability to retain a sense of modesty, even with needing help with my gown when using the bathroom. Secondly, for those with limited mobility, they also offer more independence in managing the monthly cycle.
- Performance – having used WUKA products for several years now, I’ve never had a problem with leaks. Unlike some other period products out there, I never feel like I have to worry when using the brand.
- Eco-friendly – WUKA boast up to 2 years of life span with their underwear which naturally saves a significant amount of waste going into landfill.
- Comfortable – I’ve worn several different types of WUKA underwear over the years and have always found them to be well-fitting, true to size and very comfortable. They also feel breathable, not too thick and appear like regular underwear to an outsider.
- Flexibility – the clue is in the name. The Flex range can accommodate up to 4 sizes. I think this is great as we’ve all had periods of time where we’re more or less bloated or perhaps lost or gained a bit of weight for whatever reason. The adjustable sides of the Flex range allow you to customise your fit, no matter how your body is feeling that day.

Cons
- Dexterity required – while I can definitely see the application for this range for those with disabilities, I personally think they are quite fiddly to unclasp so require a certain level of finger control and dexterity. Despite this, I enjoy that they don’t come undone by themselves so I’m not sure what could achieve this level of security but also allow those who struggle with fine motor skills to easily undo them.
- Staining – I purposely wanted the White Sand colour as it definitely wouldn’t show through my bridal outfit, but I did find staining to be a challenge in an initial test where I wore them each day for a cycle. Stains did reduce with the use of a regular stain remover being added to the wash and some pre-soaking in cold water, however. As a side note, I also enjoy lighter coloured reusable period products as it allows me to track my flow for health purposes.
Conclusion
While I completely understand that this is a very niche use for the WUKA Flex Detachable range, I knew I couldn’t keep this knowledge to myself. Given the amount of time and worry that went into trying to figure out how to manage my period on the wedding day, I didn’t want others to be left in the dark. My experience with WUKA as a brand has been brilliant and they’ve never failed me in terms of performance against leaks as well as overall comfort and feeling good in my own skin. For anyone looking to try period pants, WUKA would be my first recommendation.
Bonus Mention: WUKA Stretch Seamless

WUKA also offer another range of multi-fit pants – the Stretch range. These pants are able to cover 4 sizes due to their stretch. In my opinion, they feel as lovely as all of the other offerings from the brand and I love that I can feel comfortable, even when bloated.
